Debbie Shore's Threaders Project 5: Pleated Cushion

This is a simple way of creating a smocked look to your cushion covers, but without the hand stitching! Use a smocking grid on the back of your fabric and you won’t need to spend time measuring and marking. Materials are based on a 12” round cushion pad. If you want to cover a larger pad, measure around the girth of the cushion and double the measurement for the width of your fabric, the length is the diameter of the cushion pad. As I’m using four fabric pieces, I’ve added ¼” seam allowance to each edge. Materials needed:  • 12” round cushion pad • 4 pieces of fabric in two colours, two of each, measuring 15.5” x 12” • 2 large buttons, I’ve used my Button Factory to cover my buttons in the same fabric. • Smocking grid, 2” x 60” [you may need to join this, and cut slightly wider than the 2”] • Needle and very strong thread, plus a 5” needle [or longer if you have one] 1. Sew together the four pieces of fabric to make a long strip, alternating the patterned with pla...

Debbie Shore's Threaders Project 4: Japanese Knot Bag

This stunning bag is actually very simple to make, and can be made as large or as small as you like! Try making it up in different fabrics, denim, faux leather or even silk, which would look lovely when embroidered as an evening bag! Use a 1.4” seam allowance. Materials needed:  • 2 pieces of patterned fabric measuring 19” x 25”  • 2 pieces of lining fabric measuring 19” x 25”  • 2 pieces of fusible fleece measuring the same 1: Cut a curve around the bottom edge of each piece of fabric and fleece. 2. Turn one of the patterned pieces to the wrong side and draw a line each side, from the top, 4” from the side and 12” from the top. Using a 12” circle template, join the lines to make a curve. 3. With the patterned fabrics right sides together, cut around the curved line. You’ll see two handles forming. Measure 8” from the top of one of the handles and cut across. 4. Measure 10” from the bottom of each section on the bag and make a mark on eit...

Fuse the fleece to the outer fabric pieces. Measure 5" along the sides and top from each top corner, and cut at an angle. Repeat with the lining pieces. 2.
