Decoupage with John Lockwood

The wonderful John Lockwood joined us in the studio last week, with decoupage papers and some brilliant MDF.

Decoupage is a very old art skill, spanning centuries and continents.  We obviously know it as layering images in ever decreasing sizes, to create a 3D effect - however it's roots were flat!  Decoupage used to be smoothed and glazed on pieces of furniture, and then the love of cutting out images to transform pieces of furniture and household items, became fashionable.  Now, we have both.  The decoupage John has been demonstrating for us, if often referred to as Decopatch, but this is actually the brand name of a french company.

Decoupage is such a versatile hobby.  The papers John was showing us are strong, so will not be likely to rip when they are being applied with the adhesive.  They have stunning patterns and colours - but as they have been specifically designed for decoupage, the ink will not run when the glue is applied.

You can decoupage anything! And anyone can do it.  MDF is perfect, as you have a good flat surface to work on, however you may want to up-cycle a chair, table or even a wardrobe!  You can add glitter, inks or gilding waxes.  The choice is endless.  It's such a rewarding hobby, as the results can be seen so quickly - so good for a quick make or for someone who likes a quick craft.

Here's a few samples of the lovely work John made for us:

She's travelled all the way from Denmark to bring you incredible shows across three days, showcasing the Christmas paper range from Creativ Company. Lotte will be bringing you lots of demonstrations throughout her shows on how you can use all of these beautiful papers to create a Scandi Christmas this year. Here's just one of the projects Lotte will be showing this week...  Step 1. Half two 2.5cm wide paper star strips. Now only use three of the four paper star strips. Step 2. Double over each of the three paper star strips and cut all the ends at an angle. Put a star strip around another star strip and fold it tightly three times around this star strip. This is illustrated in the picture. Repeat this process with the other two star strips. Step 3. Assemble the three paper star strips over and under each other, forming three double le
