How to Make a Blended Sunset Background using the Faber-Castell Gelatos

The secret is out! Kay Halliwell-Sutton will be launching the brand new Gelatos pigment sticks on Hochanda this Friday, 21st October with an incredible One Day Special!

To give you a sneaky peek of what's to come, check out this easy step-by-step project which you can also find featured in the Papercraft Inspirations magazine!

The water soluble pigments in Gelatos sticks mean that they can be used either wet or dry. For this stunning sunset card, designer Cathy has applied the pigments dry and used her finger to gently blend the shades.

“I wanted to create a border around my background so I masked the edges of a piece of watercolour card with low tack tape before applying the Gelatos colours,” says Cathy. “Once I’d finished blending from red through to yellow, I removed the tape to leave a white frame around the background. I was then able to stamp the different elements directly onto the background.”

To create the silhouette image, Cathy inked her stamps using black ink for a crisp, clean result. Follow the simple steps below to make this sunset design then try blending some backgrounds of your own.

Step 1
Trim a piece of watercolour paper to measure 10x30cm and score to create a 10x15cm card blank. Mask around the edges with low tack tape to create a border.

Step 2
Apply Red Cherry Gelato directly to the bottom of the card. The Gelato’s consistency is slightly softer than a crayon and should glide on well onto the paper.

Step 3
When you have applied enough of the colour to achieve your desired hue, use your finger to blend the Gelato evenly. Continue until you are happy with the shade.

Step 4
Apply Mango and Lemon Gelato to the middle and top thirds of the card in the same way. The masking tape border means you don’t need to be too neat around the edges.

Step 5
Using black ink, stamp sprigs in the bottom left corner of the background. Stamp the sentiment in the top right corner and two butterflies in the centre of the panel.

Step 6
Carefully remove the masking tape around the edges of the panel to reveal the finished design. We love the simplicity of this card but you can add embellishments if you like.

Don't miss the launch of the Gelatos from Faber-Castell with Kay Halliwell-Sutton on Friday 21st at 8pm, and again the next day at 9am, 12pm, 4pm & 7pm!

She's travelled all the way from Denmark to bring you incredible shows across three days, showcasing the Christmas paper range from Creativ Company. Lotte will be bringing you lots of demonstrations throughout her shows on how you can use all of these beautiful papers to create a Scandi Christmas this year. Here's just one of the projects Lotte will be showing this week...  Step 1. Half two 2.5cm wide paper star strips. Now only use three of the four paper star strips. Step 2. Double over each of the three paper star strips and cut all the ends at an angle. Put a star strip around another star strip and fold it tightly three times around this star strip. This is illustrated in the picture. Repeat this process with the other two star strips. Step 3. Assemble the three paper star strips over and under each other, forming three do...
